Attempted murder charge after soldier stabbed- QHN

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a uniformed British Army officer was stabbed in Kent.

Anthony Esan, 24, was charged following the assault in Sally Port Gardens, Chatham, on Tuesday.

The soldier was attacked near his home close to Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment, shortly before 18:00 BST.

Esan was arrested at about 18:30 on the same evening near his home in Mooring Road, Rochester, which sits near Chatham, police said.

He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and is due to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court later on Thursday.

Police said the soldier was taken to a hospital for treatment.

He is currently in a serious but stable condition.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the House of Commons: “Our thoughts are with [the soldier], his family and our armed forces, who serve to keep us safe.

“We wish him a swift recovery.”
